TVS instructor licenses run on a three year cycle, and when yours comes due you have two ways to satisfy the education requirement.
The short version: file form OL 740 online with either an 18 hour continuing education certificate or a fresh pass of the instructor exam, and pay $51.
Your two renewal paths
- 18 hour continuing education program. Complete a department approved 18 hour program and submit the certificate in place of retesting.
- Retake the exam. Pass the written TVS Instructor Examination again. Note: if you have passed the TVS Operator Examination, you are exempt.
Most working instructors pick whichever fits their schedule; the 18 hour route spreads over multiple sittings, the exam route is a single appointment.

- Have your DMV occupational licensing portal credentials ready (recovering access is the most common delay, so check it early).
- Complete the instructor renewal application (OL 740).
- Upload your 18 hour certificate, or your exam documentation.
- Pay electronically: $50 renewal plus $1 family support program.
Keep your school’s other clocks in mind
Instructor licenses run three years, but the school’s owner license and the operator license each run one year. If you wear more than one hat, those dates almost never line up.
